What to Wear to a Halloween Masquerade in NYC: Inferno Looks

Three inferno-inspired masquerade looks for Masquerade Inferno at LouLou, plus how to test a mask, pick fabrics that last seven hours, and style a group.

Halloweekend NYC · Updated October 15, 2026 · 4 min read

A masquerade asks you to hide one thing and reveal everything else. Masquerade Inferno adds a hint in its name: heat. Start there, and the rest of the look writes itself.

The short answer: For Masquerade Inferno at LouLou (Friday, Oct 30, 2026, 9 PM – 4 AM, 176 8th Ave, Chelsea), build your look around a mask you can wear for hours, then take your palette from the name: black, ember red, burnt orange, smoke grey, a touch of gold. These are style ideas, not a dress code. The event is 21+, and tickets are on Eventbrite.

Three inferno looks

The Ember

A black base with a single burning accent. The easiest look to pull off, and the hardest to get wrong.

  • Base: black satin or crepe. A slip dress, a sharp suit, or a high-neck top with wide trousers.
  • Accent: one ember color only. A red-orange glove, a copper mask, a garnet lip.
  • Metal: brass or gold at the ear or wrist.
  • Works for: first-time masqueraders who want impact without effort.

The Smoke

Grey and black layered like something that has just burned out.

  • Base: charcoal, slate and sheer black. Chiffon, organza or mesh over a dark slip or shirt.
  • Mask: silver filigree or smoked metal.
  • Makeup: diffused, smudged eyes. Soft edges, nothing sharp.
  • Works for: anyone who prefers mystery to color.

The Flame

Full color, for people who want to be seen first.

  • Base: red to orange from head to toe, or a red gown or suit with orange carried into the mask.
  • Mask: feathers or sculpted metal in fire tones.
  • Rule: keep everything else simple so the color reads from across the room.
  • Works for: the person whose costume is the plan.

The mask comes first, so test it

The mask is the one piece you can't swap out halfway through the night. Treat it like a pair of new shoes.

  • Wear it at home for an hour. If it pinches at minute twenty, it will be unbearable by 1 AM.
  • Choose the fastening on purpose. Ribbon ties adjust to your head. A handheld stick mask keeps one hand busy all night. A headband style sits more securely but can press behind the ears.
  • Glasses? Try the mask over them before the night, not at the door.
  • Mind the makeup. Keep heavy product away from where the mask rests, or it will slide.
  • Check your vision. Bigger eye openings matter in a dark room.
  • Carry a backup. A plain black eye mask folds flat into a coat pocket.

Hair and makeup that work with a mask

  • Hair up or slicked back keeps ribbon ties from tangling and stops loose strands catching in the mask.
  • Put the drama where the mask isn't. The lips, the jawline, the collarbone, the hands.
  • Skip long false lashes if they brush the inside of the mask with every blink.
  • Set everything, then keep blotting papers in your pocket for the hours after midnight.

Fabrics that last seven hours

Masquerade Inferno runs from 9 PM to 4 AM. Choose fabrics for the whole night, not the first photo.

  • Velvet is rich and warm, which helps on the way there and can feel heavy later.
  • Satin looks expensive and creases fast. Sit carefully.
  • Lace layers beautifully, but snags on sequins and jewelry.
  • Tulle photographs well and crushes in a busy room.
  • Crepe and wool quietly outlast everything else.

For pairs and groups

  • Matched masks, unmatched outfits, or the reverse. Either way, one shared element ties you together.
  • One palette, three looks. Ember, Smoke and Flame side by side read as a single idea.
  • Plan the reveal. Agree whether you'll unmask together, and when.

Groups making a night of it can compare tables by group size on our VIP tables page.

Getting there masked

It's Friday, Oct 30, in Chelsea. Carry the mask in a bag rather than wearing it on the way: it keeps its shape and saves your makeup. A long dark coat over the look keeps it a surprise until you're inside, and handles the late-October chill. Bring valid photo ID, since the event is 21+, and arrive with a face that's easy to match to it.

One weekend, two masks

If you're out again on Saturday, a black mask carries over neatly to Heaven & Hell at Eden: add a halo or horns and pick a side. For the other nights' concepts, see our costume guide by event, or browse every event of the weekend.
