What to Wear to a Halloween Party in NYC 2026: Looks by Concept
Every party on this calendar has a concept. Here are easy, elevated and group costume directions for each one, plus what to skip.
Halloweekend NYC · Updated October 15, 2026 · 4 min read
The question isn't what to be. It's what the room is about. Every party on this calendar has a concept, and a costume that answers it lands harder than one that ignores it.
The short answer: Dress to the concept. Disco-afterlife glamour for Dead Disco (Thu Oct 29), a mask-led look for Masquerade Inferno (Fri Oct 30), low-light sharpness for The Descent (Fri Oct 30), a clear side for Heaven & Hell (Sat Oct 31), and a respectful, considered look for LUNA: Day of the Dead (Sun Nov 1). These are style directions, not dress codes; each event page carries the official details.
How these briefs work
Each concept gets three directions. Easy comes mostly from your own closet. Elevated is worth a shopping trip. Group works for two or more. Then one thing to skip.
Disco afterlife: Dead Disco at PUBLIC Hotel
Thursday, Oct 29 · Lower East Side · Dead Disco at PUBLIC Hotel
The idea: disco never died, it just stopped going home. Picture a last call in 1978 that simply never ended.
- Easy: a sequin or metallic top, black flares or a slip dress, pale powder and a dark lip. The ghost of a regular.
- Elevated: a silver lamé jumpsuit, smudged glitter at the eyes, a single mirror-ball earring, hair set like it survived the night.
- Group: a crew that never left the floor. Matching satin jackets, each one a shade paler than the last.
- Skip: big wigs that blow into your eyes on a windy roof.
Masquerade: Masquerade Inferno at LouLou
Friday, Oct 30 · Chelsea
The idea: masked, with heat. The Inferno name invites ember tones against black.
- Easy: an all-black outfit you already own, a lace or metal eye mask, and one red accent: a lip, a glove, a ribbon.
- Elevated: velvet or satin, opera gloves, and a mask with flame-colored detail in copper, garnet or burnt orange.
- Group: one palette, different masks. Everyone in black, each with a single ember accent.
- Skip: a full-face mask you can't talk or drink in.

Underground: The Descent at Submercer
Friday, Oct 30 · SoHo · The Descent at Submercer
The idea: below street level, away from the city. Dress for low light and a long night.
- Easy: black on black with one texture doing the work: leather, mesh or satin. Boots you can stand in for hours.
- Elevated: a sharp tailored silhouette, a harness or chain detail, slicked-back hair, a graphic eye.
- Group: a uniform. Everyone in the same cut, so you read as one crew from across the room.
- Skip: anything wide or sprawling, like wings, hoops or long trains.
Angel or devil: Heaven & Hell at Eden
Saturday, Oct 31 · Midtown · Heaven & Hell at Eden
The idea: choose a side. Eden is multi-level, which makes the split feel physical.
- Easy: heaven in white, cream or gold; hell in red and black. One clear signal each, a halo or a pair of horns.
- Elevated: a fallen angel with ash-grey feathers and smudged gold, or a tailored devil in deep red with black lacquer horns.
- Group: split down the middle, or go fallen together, everyone caught somewhere between the two.
- Skip: oversized wings you'll be carrying in your arms by 1 AM.
Day of the Dead: LUNA at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
Sunday, Nov 1 · Brooklyn · LUNA: Day of the Dead
The idea: Día de los Muertos is a living tradition of remembering people who have died. It isn't a costume theme, so dress like a guest who understands that.
- Easy: a dark outfit with marigold-orange accents and fresh or silk flowers in your hair.
- Elevated: a calavera face painted with patience and detail, paired with tailored black and floral embroidery. A tribute, not a gag.
- Group: coordinate in marigold and black, with florals and clean tailoring rather than matching skull masks.
- Skip: sombreros, serapes, fake mustaches, or anything that turns a culture into a punchline. Objects from an ofrenda belong on the altar, not on your outfit.
One base, four nights
Going out more than once? Build every night on one base: black trousers or a black dress, good boots, a long dark coat. Then change the signal. Sequins on Thursday, a mask on Friday, a halo or horns on Saturday, marigolds on Sunday. Four looks, one suitcase.
Going as a group on one particular night? Compare tables by group size on the VIP tables page, and see the full calendar on the events page.
Practical notes
- Every event is 21+. Carry valid photo ID in a pocket your costume actually has.
- Test the full look at home for an hour: mask, makeup, shoes.
- Late-October nights can be cold. Choose a coat that belongs to the costume.
- Leave anything that could be mistaken for a weapon at home.

Quick answers
Is there a dress code for these Halloween parties?
This guide offers style ideas, not a dress code. Each event page on Halloweekend NYC has the official event details.
What should I wear to Dead Disco at PUBLIC Hotel?
Dead Disco (Thu Oct 29, 10 PM – 4 AM) has a disco-afterlife concept, so sequins, metallics and a ghostly finish suit it. These are suggestions, not rules.
What should I wear to Heaven & Hell at Eden?
Pick a side: white, cream and gold for heaven, red and black for hell. Heaven & Hell at Eden runs Saturday, Oct 31, 10 PM – 5 AM, at 20 W 36th St in Midtown, and is 21+.
How do I dress respectfully for a Day of the Dead party?
Treat Día de los Muertos as a tradition, not a costume theme: florals, marigold tones and careful, celebratory calavera makeup, with no caricature props. LUNA: Day of the Dead is Sunday, Nov 1, 2 PM – 2 AM, 21+.
